TMJ dentists all over the world are slowly discovering that mouth splints, mouth guards and drugs aren’t the only way to cure TMJ. These treatments are bandaid solutions that don’t fix the root causes of TMJ.

So what does cure the root causes?

Simple exercises that can be done at home. It has been proven that you can relalign your jaw and relieve your TMJ symptoms with about 10-15 minutes of simple and easy exercises over a two week period. Of course it may take longer, but some people are reporting massive pain relief after just one session and complete relief within just a few days

Here are some exercises you can try out now:

1. If you are experiencing clicking in your jaw, close your mouth and let your tongue touch the top. Keeping your mouth closed move your tongue backwards. Now ease your mouth open until your tongue is no longer touching your palate. Hold that for a ten count and repeat a couple of times.

2. If your jaw shifts to the side, focus on opening and closing your mouth while being careful to make sure that it lines up right and doesn’t shift. Repeat this several times, but don’t over do it. Listen to the pain.

3. If you are experiencing a lot of tension in your jaw, stretching exercise are an effective way to help. Open you jaw slowly as wide as the discomfort will allow and close again slowly. Repeating this should help with the tension.

These three TMJ exercises alone will not cure your TMJ, you will need different exercises depending on what sort of pain you are experiencing.

How Do They Work?

Basically, your going to be strengthening some muscles, so others can relax and your jaw can realign. Most of the time TMJ is caused by stress, which results in tension in the tendons and muscles of the jaw. This can lead to teeth, grinding headaches, facial pains.. and much more.

Here are some quick exercises you can try now:

  1. Extend lower jaw forward and hold for 2 seconds, then retract to normal position for 2 seconds. Rinse and repeat 10 – 15 times.

  2. This time we are going to do the same as before except placing two fingers against the chin to build up resistance. Same time, same amount of repetitions.

  3. This exercises is used to strengthen the side to side motions of your jaw. Place two fingers on your left jawbone to provide resistance, open your mouth, and then using your fingers move your jaw to the left pressing against your fingers for two seconds.

Next relax your jaw so your fingers are pressing your jaw to the right, and hold this for another two seconds, then repeat pushing your jaw against your two left fingers for two seconds, then relaxing and your fingers pushing your jaw to the right for another two seconds.

After this do your other side, putting two fingers on your right jawbone and pressing your jaw into your fingers for two seconds, then relaxing and letting your fingers press your jaw to the left for another two seconds. Remember to keep your mouth open while you do this exercise.

  4. Open and close your mouth slowly 6-10 times. Nice and simple one.

  5. If your experiencing TMJ headaches this exercise will be helpful. Open your mouth and run your finger along your top teeth until you get to the back, and you will feel a soft etch. Massage this area for about three to five seconds and make sure to do it on both sides.

If any of these exercises are overly painful, discontinue them. Hopefully these will help your pain a little, but to completely get rid of TMJ for good you will need a full set of exercises.

There is no easy cure for TMJ? …Or Is There?

If you’ve been suffering from TMJ symptoms I don’t need to tell you how frustrating and painful this condition can be. But why is it proving so hard to treat? Dentists and doctors will likely just have to give you muscle relaxant drugs or pain relief medicine. This is just a band aid solution and these drugs will slowly lose effectiveness over time.

Many dentists will try and get you to use a mouth guard or splint to stop your teeth grinding. This will slow down the wear and tear but will do nothing for the pain. The treatment is dodgy at best because it’s often very hard to tell what causes TMJ, stress being a very common cause though.

TMJ Pain Facts and How To Fix Them:

The only way to fix your TMJ effectively is with TMJ exercises. These work by relaxing and strengthening your jaw muscles to fix your jaw alignment and alleviate pain. Exercises for TMJ are simple and easy to do, but they are not an overnight miracle cure. You might be one of those rare people who feel huge improvements after literally one day, but stick with it for a week or two and you will definitely see results.

  • Working directly on the jaw muscles strengthen and loosens them up. Healthy jaw muscles guide the jaw joints into right position instead of misplacing them.
  • The tongue is a strong muscle. Many people have lot of tension in this muscle for some reason. It’s very important to release the tension in the tongue, using simple tongue exercises. Remember all muscles are connected. Tension in tongue means tension in the jaw.
  • The throat exercises strengthen the throat. The throat muscles are some of these ‘hidden’ muscles we seldom pay attention to. They’re however extremely important and if they’re stiff, you’ll suffer several symptoms in your throat.
  • The neck and shoulder muscle exercises are very important to remove tension you may have in your shoulders and neck. These muscles are directly connected to the jaw muscle and quickly tense up as soon as there is any tension in your jaw.
  • All muscles need oxygen to function properly. Stiff muscles, reduce the amount of oxygen they can process. Using specially designed breathing exercises, you can bring these muscles back to life, so they may begin to function properly again.

These types of exercises are the only proven treatment for TMJ. They take under 10 minutes a day to complete, but it still takes time and effort. You need to train your jaw to start moving the way it is supposed to.

Unfortunately there are many different exercises to treat many different TMJ problems. So you need specific exercises for your specific problem. You can get these by finding a therapist who specialises in TMJ, but this can be quite expensive and hard to find.

I have personally reviewed the TMJ treatment packages that are available online that have been working very well.
